In Washington, a new report out of the Environmental Protection Agency says that limited data and unreliable estimates on air pollution from oil and natural gas production is hindering the EPA’s efforts to police the drilling boom. Inspector General Arthur Elkins Jr. said the agency has failed to directly measure emmissions from some pieces of equipment and processes, and some estimates it does have are of questionable quality. The EPA, under President Obama has stepped up regulating natural gas drilling, which has been booming due to hydraulic fracturing. About 25,000 wells per year are currently being fraced, a process in which water, chemicals and sand are injected at high pressure underground to release trapped hydrocarbons. EPA has responded that they are developing a comprehensive strategy to improve its pollution figures.
